Professor Erno Rubik
The Rubik's cube has fascinated people ever since its invention in 1974. Invented by Erno Rubik, a Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture, the "Rubik's Cube" was originally called the "Magic Cube" by Mr. Rubik.
In 1980 the puzzle was renamed the "Rubik's Cube" by a company called "Ideal Toys" that began to mass produce them. The Rubik's Cube instantly became a huge success and even won the 1980 German "Spiel des Jahres" or "Game of the year" award. It is said to be the worlds most popular and best selling toy, some 300 million Rubik's Cubes and imitations sold to date.
There are several types of puzzles that arguably could have been spawned from the original Rubik's cube. Spawned directly from the 3 x3 Rubik's cube there is a 2 x2 Rubik's cube; nicknamed the pocket cube. The 4 x4 Rubik's cube; nicknamed the Rubik's Revenge. Also there is a 5 x5 Rubik's cube that is nicknamed the Professor cube. Each cube is progressively harder than its predecessor. There are several (possibly hundred) types of puzzles out there, from the Megaminx to the Mastercuboctahedron. Each puzzle provides a different challenge and the same good feeling when it is solved.
